The 10/40 Window

What Is the 10/40 Window?

Across the globe there is a vast region stretching from 10 degrees north latitude to 40 degrees north latitude, spanning North Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia. Mission leaders call this area the 10/40 Window.

It is not simply a geographic term. For Christians concerned with the spread of the Gospel, the 10/40 Window represents the greatest concentration of spiritual need on earth.

More than 5 billion people—over 60% of the world’s population—live within this region. Yet the overwhelming majority of them live in places where the name of Jesus is rarely heard and where access to the Gospel is extremely limited.

This region contains most of the world’s Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist populations, along with thousands of ethnic groups that remain largely untouched by the message of Christ.

And for many who live there, the barriers to hearing the Gospel are immense.

Governments restrict religious freedom.
Social pressure punishes those who consider faith in Christ.
War and political instability are common.
Extreme poverty grips entire populations.

In some countries within the 10/40 Window, a person could live their entire life without ever meeting a single follower of Jesus.

The World’s Largest Concentration of Unreached People

Missiologists use the term “Unreached People Group” (UPG) to describe an ethnic or cultural group where less than 2% of the population identifies as Christian and there is no viable local church movement capable of reaching the rest of the group.

In practical terms, this means that if the Gospel is ever going to reach them, it must come from outside their community.

Today, researchers estimate there are more than 7,000 unreached people groups in the world, representing over 3 billion people.

A stunning majority of these groups live inside the 10/40 Window.

Entire nations within this region contain hundreds of people groups that have little or no access to Scripture, churches, or Christian teaching. Many languages still lack a full translation of the Bible. Many communities have never heard the story of Jesus even once.

To understand the scale of the challenge, imagine cities the size of New York or London—filled entirely with people who have never had a meaningful opportunity to hear the Gospel.

That reality exists thousands of times over across the 10/40 Window.

Extraordinary Need… But Very Little Mission Focus

The tragedy becomes even clearer when we examine how global Christian resources are distributed.

Despite the enormous need in the 10/40 Window:

Less than 3% of all Christian missionary activity is directed toward unreached people groups.
Less than 1% of global Christian giving goes toward reaching those who have never heard the Gospel.

In other words, over 99% of Christian ministry funding is spent among populations that already have access to churches, Bibles, and Christian communities.

Meanwhile, billions of people in the 10/40 Window still wait to hear the name of Jesus for the first time.

It is difficult to imagine a greater imbalance.

Regions with the greatest spiritual access receive the vast majority of resources, while regions with the least access receive almost none.

For many believers, discovering this reality is deeply sobering.

It raises a profound question:

What if the global Church begins to redirect attention toward the places that need the Gospel the most?

A Region Marked by Deep Brokenness

The 10/40 Window is not only a place of spiritual need.

It is also home to some of the most intense human suffering in the world.

Many of the nations within this region face ongoing cycles of:

• war and conflict
• political instability
• human trafficking
• religious persecution
• famine and poverty
• refugee crises

Entire generations grow up surrounded by fear, instability, and loss.

Yet in the midst of this hardship, there is also a deep spiritual hunger.

Across this vast region, millions of people are searching for truth, longing for forgiveness, and hoping for a relationship with the God who created them.

A Remarkable New Opportunity

For most of history, reaching people in the 10/40 Window has been extremely difficult.

Borders are closed.
Missionaries are restricted.
Public evangelism is often impossible.

But something extraordinary has changed in recent years.

The digital age has quietly opened doors that were once unimaginable.

Today, billions of people in the 10/40 Window carry smartphones.
They search the internet for answers to life’s deepest questions.
They watch videos, read articles, and engage in private conversations that could never happen publicly.

And something even more remarkable is happening.

Across the Muslim world and beyond, countless individuals report experiencing vivid dreams or visions of a mysterious “Man in White.”

These dreams often lead them to begin searching for answers about Jesus.

For many, the internet becomes the first place they turn.

A New Way to Respond

Gateway Ministries exists to help respond to this moment.

Through the Man in White Dreams outreach, we are using digital tools to connect with people in the 10/40 Window who are searching for truth after experiencing dreams or spiritual encounters.

Many are asking the same question:

Who is the Man in White?

On the next page, we share the remarkable story of what is happening—and how people across the 10/40 Window are encountering Jesus in unexpected ways.
